Skin Care: How to Treat Dry, Chapped Skin
 

Dry skin is uncomfortable, to say the least. When we grow and seasons change, it’s like our skin has a mind of its own! Skincare is important to maintain during the change of seasons.
 

Whatever the texture, all of those things happen because of our skin being exposed to a variety of temperatures and conditions. Including our local weather, unpredictable climates, and working environment.
 

As always, a certain way to cover the basics of skin care is to drink plenty of water. We require lots of water each day to flush out toxins in our body, both on the inside and outside. By not doing so, our skin can react in a not so friendly way.
 

Our skin can sort of “freak out” and that’s it letting us know it needs something we are not giving it. Other times, this can be due to genetics, but there’s always a way to treat dry skin.
 

If you find that your skin condition gets more serious, such as unusual bumps, cuts, and patches of skin you need to see your dermatologist or doctor to get the best treatment for your skin.
 

Summer
 

Let’s face it, we all want a lovely complexion. During the summer months, the key is to not over do it with showers and any over the counter products including over moisturizing.
 

While we all may get sweaty from the heat and immediately want to run to the shower, over showering can be just as damaging to the skin and make it both dry and hard to work with. Long showers and baths can actually dry out the skin even more!
 

Here’s what you can do.
 

After your daily skin care regimen, you want to make sure to moisturize your face, lips, and body with a moisturizer that contains an SPF 30 or higher. If going outside to sunbathe or to shop, use a body sunscreen before leaving.
 

You need to get those soft juices back into your skin and also protect you from sun damage. Some sunscreens may want you to sit for 10-15 mins before leaving the house in order for it to do its job, let it be worth it.
 

Wear light breathable clothing including a hat. If you know you have specific dry areas of skin that are patchy or get more dry cover up when exposed to the sun, cover those areas or apply lotion every few hours or as needed.
 

Lastly, keep it cool and simple.
 

Winter
 

In the winter, it’s much easier for our face to get dry so we do need to moisturize more than we would in the summer.
 

Use a mild moisturizer, avoid switching our brands so that your face has time to get used to one. Not only is your face transitioning from a different season, we have 7 layers of skin to take care of. Our skin not only needs time to heal but to get nourished.
 

For hands and body, do not use hot water to bathe. Use warm water. Your skin can still dry out in the winter with a hot bath as much as it would in the summer.
 

Keep a hand cream or body lotion in your tote, purse, or carrying bag. There are many products on the market that are effective, so read the labels carefully and choose one that works for you.
 

Avoid using products with alcohol, sulfates, and parabens as they are harmful to the skin. Do use a product with natural ingredients or hypoallergenic and SPF ingredients, as other harmful ingredients can often cause breakouts or pimples.
 

For the lips or areas around the mouth, you can easily get rid of dead skin by brushing your lips with a toothbrush or using a washcloth and warm water to lightly scrub it away. To replenish use a Chapstick or Petroleum Jelly that contains sunscreen or has a labeled 3 in 1 total care.
 

Do not lick your lips. If you find yourself dry around the lips or corners, use your finger to work the product into the corners of your mouth including around top and bottom lip. Do this both at night and again in the morning for best results.
